Juan de Sande. Biography & works

Proyecto H Madrid features “It Is Only Natural To Wish a Little Bit of Light. Chapter One¨, a solo show in which the photographer Juan de Sande (Madrid, 1965) presents a new project focused on light, a record change with respect to his previous productions.

In order to understand Sande's work, we must know that we are dealing with a system of double representation. Pictures are not only an image of what the camera captures but also of the photographer's intervention into reality. This duplicity and processual dimension exists throughout the work of Sande, but has taken a central stage in this series dedicated to light. Images are the final result of an intellectual, physical and technical process that develops the space and time. The photographer is both behind and in front of the target, it is there, physically, so what the camera is capturing is a photographer’s action. So the author, in a certain way, becomes the elliptical subject of the story.

This exhibition will appear to be a radical change from the images to which the author had accustomed us. However, the underlying concern is the same that has led him since its beginnings as photographer in the 1990s. Since, as Sande himself writes in his text for the exhibition, “it is not strange that an author whose main medium is the photography should focus into light. Because, what is photography but light?".

In fact, the challenge of working with light is present in earlier works, such as “In Shadow in Nothingness” (2005-2008), in which he applied to Nature the light studies he had previously used for objects in the studio. On the other hand, the processual aspect (the imprint of the artist’s intervention) also comes from previous works like “Impossible point of view” (2003-2005) or “And that the salmon sing by the streets” (2014).

This new series featuring at Proyecto H is the result of two years work and, as the author says "one more step in my interest in the photographic medium as a topic", hence the "first chapter" of his practice for present to future. As “It Is Only Natural to Wish a Little Bit of Light” is intended to "go a little further" from the conventional use of light into photographic practice. Sande has left aside the "found" light, that is, that one discovered in different locations, to focus on the "created" light, that one generated by a projector. Therefore, the whole series is entirely made in the studio.
